No matter how savvy and experienced you are in leading your company, it can be quite another thing to lead yourself and others to advocate for your loved one during a medical crisis. Our guest is Saundra Rogers, a speaker, storyteller, and veteran teacher of English Language learners. She joins us to speak about her mission to teach others how to advocate for family and friends experiencing a medical crisis and to be a “voice for the voiceless.” Saundra graduated from Boston University School of Education and holds a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University. She is currently a doctoral candidate at NOVA Southeastern University where she studies Educational Leadership.
Under the most stressful, uncertain and ambiguous circumstances, Saundra champions the idea of not letting fear paralyze you during medical emergencies. She explains how important it is to learn everything it takes to help a loved one get the healthcare service they deserve. Saundra draws upon her own experiences advocating for her son, Nelson’s, healthcare at the beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic. She shares what it takes to develop an advocacy mindset, the questions you should ask to increase quality healthcare, and her advice for getting through ‘gatekeepers’ to obtain important information.
“It’s normal to be worried when your loved one is critically ill, to get paralyzed with fear, or get dependent on the medical team to make all of the decisions. But that’s precisely the time when you need to act.” – Saundra Rogers
