As you lead your company to new levels of success, you’re making big decisions that challenge the status quo. These may include merger & acquisition, entering a new market, reorganization, and more. How are you facing employees’ and other stakeholders’ likely resistance to your leadership decisions around these issues? Some CEOs and C-Suite executives actively push harder when they encounter resistance. But this dynamic can often create a battle of wills that can further extend the conflict and increase your company’s risk of disruption.
That’s why in this Quick Take episode we discuss a different and even more effective approach to confronting conflict that can break the cycle of conflict and result in more productive outcomes.
Something you may not know about us is that some of our leadership philosophy has been influenced by our exposure to martial arts and our training in Aikido and Aiki Jujitsu. We’ve seen how the spirit of Aikido can be applied to tough leadership confrontation. This includes acknowledging each other’s truths, getting curious about what is behind opposing points of view, and redirecting confrontations to look for points of mutual agreement. Remember, the word “aiki” is literally translated as “a fusion of energy.”
Applying the spirit of Aikido to leadership can result in surprisingly positive solutions to business conflicts.
