What does it take to lead into the future when everything seems so uncertain? Of course, it’s critical to pivot and adapt in response to emerging technologies like AI, dramatic market shifts, and other changes in the rapidly changing world. However, if you’re like the visionary top leadership teams we work with, you also believe it’s just as important to focus on leading for transformational growth to respond to new opportunities brought on by these changes. Boards and Top Management that are especially in synch with each other about future-focused governance and leadership in the changing environment are the ones who will be even more effective at achieving their company’s purpose.
That’s why in this week’s episode, we’re welcoming back guest Peter Gleason, President and CEO of the National Association of Corporate Directors. He’s a recognized expert on board leadership and corporate governance issues and serves as a member of NACD’s national faculty. Peter is regularly quoted in the national media and is a frequent presenter on the subjects of corporate governance, executive and director compensation, risk, strategic planning, and board/shareowner relations. He served as a commissioner on every NACD Blue Ribbon Commission report issued since joining NACD in the year 2000.
Our conversation with Peter focuses on highlights from the NACD report, “The Future of the American Board.” Peter shares what influenced the committee to think about a “fresh look” at future-focused governance. He also shares insights about how the committee redefined and arrived at the ten governing principles. We dig deeper into several of these guiding principles, including the need for continuous learning and prudent experimentation without losing strategic focus. Peter also recommends three immediately useful ideas for how Management and Boards can strengthen their relationship in a way that can increase both short-term and long-term growth for the future.
Things are changing so fast in our environment that, as business leaders, you have to stay current… and have a true focus on continuous learning. | Peter R. Gleason
