What’s the key to increasing collaboration and business innovation? How about drawing on the pioneering methods of improv from The Second City?
In this Quick Take episode, we discuss why leading for collaboration and business innovation will only become more important in the year ahead. We discuss the challenge of leading for collaboration when there can be many perspectives. We also discuss how adopting a “Yes, And” approach can help everyone move beyond opposing viewpoints to increase collaboration and business innovation. As an example, we revisit part of Pam’s conversation with Kelly Leonard, co-author of the best-selling book Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses “No, But” Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration − Lessons from The Second City.
Kelly has been Vice President of Creative Strategy, Innovation and Business Development at The Second City since 2016. He produced hundreds of original revues with talent such as Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Keegan Michael Key, Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler. As part of Second City Works, he has focused on leading companies’ efforts to apply the principles and practices of improvisation to help organizations and individuals thrive in a complex and uncertain world. He also co-created and co-directed a groundbreaking initiative with the University of Chicago that explores the intersection of behavioral science and improvisation. Kelly is a popular speaker, appearing at Aspen Ideas Festival, Chicago Ideas Week and TEDxBroadway. He also hosts the Second City Works/WGN Podcast “Getting to Yes, And.”
You have to say “yes, and” if you want to create an innovative, creative culture. – Kelly Leonard
